By 2030: 50% of Americans will be obese

According to a new report from Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in 2030, half of Americans would be considered obese (44%).

Today that rate stands at about 35 percent, a projected gain of 9 percent over the next two decades. A significant increase for most of the experts cited in the report. However, the study recalls that it is still less than that known over the past two decades. In 1990, the American obesity average was 12 percent. In 2005, the US average nearly doubled, with 23 percent of Americans considered to be in the “obese” category. Five years later, this percentage doubled again with a rate hovering at 35.7 percent between 2009 and 2010.

According to this report, “ F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2012 ,” thirteen states could have obesity rates above 60 percent, with Mississippi expected to rank first at 66.7 percent. While Colorado is expected to have the lowest obesity rate at 44.8 percent. This new report follows a similar report published by the US government’s Department of Health and Human Services which put the rate at around 42 for 2030.

In addition to this warning, the document presents recommendations to reduce health care costs related to obesity. A proposal that several American states have already begun to apply. New York City has recently decided to impose a partial ban on the sale of large-format sodas .
