Obesity in Canada at record high
Obesity has reached worrying proportions in many countries in recent years. Canada is no exception to this phenomenon by posting its latest figures
in The Canadian Journal Of Public Health , following a study by the University of British Columbia.
It would appear that more than 30% of the population in certain maritime regions would be obese. British Columbia has also revised its data upwards, going from 20% of the population to 25% obese.
This increase in obesity is all the more worrying for specialists who are seeing its consequences increase through medical problems, diabetes, chronic and heart diseases, certain cancers and many other equally serious illnesses.
Results of investigations by public health agencies
Many public health agencies, such as Statistics Canada, Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada have investigated weight gain in children aged five to seventeen, figures from recent years show a problem recurrent.
Young boys aged five to eleven would be more affected than girls, nearly 20% against 6%, i.e. three times more important. According to CBS Medical, food would be one of the causes of this increase on the part of industry and the processing of food which would contribute to making calories.
CBS also highlights the intensive use of video games and other factors that limit young children in their physical exercises.
Studies have already been carried out, but according to specialists, these would not have been carried out long enough to prove their effectiveness, it is its same protagonists who denounce the lack of communication between the medical community, parents, food industries and regulatory bodies.
Doctor Tremblay’s sentence
Dr. Tremblay of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario said of the increase, “It’s a wake up call and we need to make some fundamental changes. We need to stop saying “we can’t” because the health of the population is at stake here. »
