Philippe Froguel, diabetologist, talks about bariatric surgery

In a program broadcast on Thursday May 2, France Info radio evokes the enthusiasm for the various obesity surgeries. These surgeries indeed appeal to a multitude of individuals.

Recently, it would even appear that in addition to being overweight, this surgery could solve diabetes problems.

On this subject, the diabetologist and genetic researcher at the Lille University Hospital Philippe Froguel was questioned. He indicates that, in fact, bariatric surgery makes it possible to observe, sometimes, an almost immediate disappearance of diabetes.

I quote: “We realize that more than half of the very obese diabetics had a normal blood sugar level even before losing the first kilos”.

The diabetologist adds that this is a complicated phenomenon, probably due to changes in hormones:

  • Stimulation of insulin generation
  • Stimulation of hormones that regulate appetite

The diabetologist warns about operative and post-operative complications (which remain rare but can be very serious). A third of patients have to be re-operated. Sometimes the nutritional complications are very severe. He therefore recalls, rightly, that it is absolutely imperative to have a nutritional and endocrinologist follow-up.

The patients who have the best chance of succeeding with this type of surgery are “genetically” predisposed patients (this concerns about 5% of obese people according to the diabetologist).
