A regional conference for quality food in the Pacific

From October 3 to 5, 2013, a regional conference for quality food in the Pacific will be held. This conference will allow debate on the subjects of obesity and diet with speakers from each of the three French communities in the Pacific:   French Polynesia (where the conference is taking place, in Tahiti), New Caledonia as well as Wallis and Futuna .

The Health Department is in charge of coordinating this conference locally under two main entities:

  • The Secretariat of the South Pacific Community (SPC)
  • The World Health Organization (WHO).

The objective of the conference is to allow all the different invited speakers (of very different origins: industry sector, representatives of public authorities, mass distribution, agriculture, etc.), to share and establish actions concrete and conceivable for their different communities so that the food is ”  of better quality “.

Small countries and/or communities in the Pacific are truly affected by obesity. There are a multitude of reasons for this which will be precisely presented during the conference. The dependence of these countries on exports, for example, is a constraint that has reduced the quality of the food supply in the Pacific. As well as a much more sedentary lifestyle.

On the “  menu  ” of the conference there will be 3 very distinct days that we present to you below.

At the end of the conference, CalculateYoursBMI will try to collect information if reports are published, in order to inform you as best as possible.

Day 1: State of play in the Pacific

This involves, in the morning, making an inventory of the food supply in Wallis & Futuna, New Caledonia and French Polynesia.

In the afternoon, the debates will be oriented towards the various public policies that act in favor of quality food (the examples of Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands & Quebec will be discussed).

Day 2: The levers of change

The second day will be devoted to the various axes of possible improvements in order to prevent and/or reduce this overweight and obesity which are constantly gaining ground.

For this, all the different levers will be put forward: whether they are entirely public (like the PNNS, National Health Nutrition Plan, or even like the Overseas Obesity Plan) or whether they are more private-oriented (partnership with the agrifood industry, for example)

Day 3: Develop a quality food offer

The third and last day aims to prioritize different actions and/or recommendations in order to close the conference. This is a logical order: after the inventory of the first day and the presentation of the levers of the second day, the third day will allow the 3 communities to have many cards in hand to agree on a joint statement to guide the different policies in each of the communities.

It is therefore an excellent initiative and a conference that promises to be very interesting.

At the end of the conference, if public reports are published, then we will not hesitate to inform you as best as possible by publishing a new article.

arious speakers. Remember that the speakers are experts from various countries as well as decision-makers & specialists from each of the 3 communities:
