Always more drugs for obese people?

It was to be expected: the pharmaceutical market is moving more and more towards pills, drugs, tablets and other capsules that will “help” people suffering from obesity to fight off their extra pounds.

Until now appetite suppressants were honored even if some were rejected by the European Medicines Agency (1) . For manufacturers it is a golden manna, the market will flourish in the years to come. In France, seven million obese people are victims of this epidemic which affects more and more young people, creating in them future chronic diseases such as diabetes, increased risk of stroke or heart disease. So this time, what is it?

Specific cells to manage overweight

According to a recent study (2) , certain cells in our brain have been shown to secrete hormones called  pro-opiomelanocortin peptides . These have a fundamental role in the regulation of appetite .

Around the age of 45, more or less at the start of the menopause and andropause period, this hormone is reduced by the inevitable catabolism of these specific cells. Just like the other cells and hormonal productions of the body, aging is created. It then develops an inevitable coating of the abdomen which tends to thicken.

According to researchers from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, who publish their analysis in the scientific journal “Endocrinology”, these cells become lazy and deceive the person when taking food. This epidemic of obesity and overweight affects more than two million individuals in the European Union, and this is why researchers, who have clearly identified this mechanism, are developing drug treatments to regulate and control the appetite in collaboration with the universities of Cambridge and Michigan.

A miracle drug treatment?

For Professor Lora Heisler, who works at the Rowet Research Institute for Health and Nutrition, these drugs will, in the near future, create a feeling of satiety when, naturally, this no longer exists. . It is with her team that she is developing this treatment which will make it possible to anticipate obesity itself.

For Professor Heisler, the closer we get to menopause, the less the cells send warning signals, those that lead to illusions about the amount of food needed.

But, things are not obvious since Tam Fry, of the “National Obesity Foundation” rejects this approach. For him, even if it can help overweight people, this approach hides the submerged part of the iceberg which remains malnutrition and the lack of knowledge concerning healthy and balanced food.

The usefulness of revising your dietary lifestyle

In the online magazine devoted to European news and debates, a file (3) invites the Internet user to review his nutritional hygiene. This is now more than necessary to avoid cardiovascular disease and its complications such as diabetes and cholesterol. These two pathologies are directly associated with the scourge of obesity. A summit on chronic diseases has already taken place in April this year, then, for 2030, the WHO will increase support and prevention actions.

What do these mobilizations propose? How will these debates, conferences and meetings be able to influence the behavior and bad habits acquired by overweight people? It should be remembered that the 2003-2008 action program, which aimed to reduce deaths linked to cardiovascular pathologies, saw a stagnation in the number of these deaths six years later, which remains just as high in Central Europe and in Eastern Europe.
