World Diabetes Day: the Diab’attitudes44 association
November 14, 2014 will be World Diabetes Day. A good reason to remember that many associations exist in France to help people with diabetes and their families on a daily basis.
This is the case of the association Diab’attitudes44, present throughout the Loire-Atlantique department. The vice-president, Mrs. RAYNARD Maryse, makesa presentation of her associationon the Breizh Info(1) website. It aims to support parents of diabetic children in everyday activities such as support for returning to sport, school or restaurants.

With already 25 active families, Diab’attitudes44 in partnership with dieticians and psychologists at Nantes University Hospital, organize information meetings for parents and young people. An appointment where we take the opportunity to exchange experiences and make known our daily difficulties in the face of the disease.
Mrs. RAYNARD specifies “the first days after the declaration of diabetes, families need to empty their bag, to confide“. And Maryse RAYNARD knows what she is talking about, since she is herself themother of a 12-year-old girl, suffering from type 1 diabetes, and usulino-dependent.
To begin the follow-up, at the School of Diabetes at the University Hospital of Nantes, the child is hospitalized for ten days, accompanied by his parents. This hospitalization will allow the parents, but also the child, to know everything about the disease, thanks to a team of pediatric diabetologists specifically trained. Other people can also follow this learning protocol such as other family members (brother, sister, grandparents) or the nanny, so that the daily difficulties due to ignorance of the disease are reduced to a minimum.
Parents must be able to reproduce care protocols and explain them to third parties such as the teacher. Meals should also be included.
Diab’attitudes44 organizesmany outings between families to allow them to bond and not feel alone in this ordeal, by going bowling or tree climbing for example.
The organization of café-debates is planned to make the association better known, and to welcome and support new families.
This association for the fight against diabetes is, of course, not the only one of its kind in France. And on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, no less than190 member associations of the International Diabetes Federation in 150 countries will celebrate this day.
