Grape juice or wine would burn fat

A recent study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry shows the fat-burning benefits of grape juice and wine. The Oregon State University researchers point out that their main goal remains to guide patients in their food choices. The findings reveal an interesting finding: “Drinking grape juice or wine, in moderation , may help improve the health of overweight people by helping them burn fat better.”

A dietary strategy to reduce fat accumulation

With this study, the scientists wish to promote a dietary strategy based on common foods with the aim of countering obesity and the resulting risks. The tests were carried out on overweight mice.

The research team supplemented the mice’s diet with portions of black grapes, which in humans amounts to about a cup and a half of grapes each day . Ten weeks after this diet, it appears that initially overweight mice show a decrease in fat in the liver, as well as in blood sugar, even reaching almost normal values, comparable to healthy mice with a normal diet.

The various results suggest that the consumption of black grapes has an action on metabolic function, and contributes to managing the risk of obesity.

The mode of action of ellagic acid, naturally present in grapes

In this study, researchers exposed different human liver and fat cells to four compounds that occur naturally in dark red, muscat grapes.

Among them, ellagic acid has a particularly effective mode of action and considerably slows down the development of fat cells. It also participates in fatty acid metabolism in liver cells. This compound facilitates the burning of fat, in particular by improving the liver function of individuals suffering from obesity.

According to Neil Shay, biochemist and researcher at Oregon State University, two proteins are involved: “It seems that ellagic acid and the other compounds identified bind to 2 proteins, PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma which promote fat and glucose metabolism. Potential targets therefore, beyond the option of ellagic acid or…grape supplementation”.

In conclusion, this study has identified four compounds naturally present in grapes with a mode of action in the combustion of fat , mainly in the liver. This discovery could improve the health of overweight individuals affected by the scourge of obesity.
