Our birth month could reveal our future illnesses
If we could know in advance what diseases will affect us in our future life, it would be a real advantage. We could, as soon as possible, prevent these possible diseases. What ifthis was really possible?
Researchers at Columbia University in New York in the United States wanted to look into the problem. They therefore wanted to establish a link between our month of birth and the risk of developing a disease during our lifetime.
The study
This study was published in early June 2015 in the Journal of American Medical Informatics Association. The survey was conducted on more than 1.7 million people treated in New York between 1985 and 2013, taking into account more than 1600 pathologies.
If you want to know more, the publication in the Journal of American Medical Informatics Association(1) is composed of an explanatory text as well as various diagrams and tables describing in detail the diseases studied, month of birth, and level of risk of development of the pathology. The method of calculations (for the most scientific of you) is also provided.
The results
The resultsare astonishing. Indeed, the risks of developing certain pathologies differ according to the month of birth. More specifically, for example, people born in October would have a higher risk of developing attention deficit disorder, or people born in March would be more affected by heart problems. It should also be noted that people born in July and October would have a significant risk of developing asthma.
Peopleborn in May would be the most spared. This link was established with 55 pathologies (39 pathologies confirmed in the past as well as 16 more).
Let’s be careful
The director of the study, Mr. TATONETTI Nicholas, specifies that we should not give too much importance to these results for the moment, they areof lesser importance compared to diet, or physical exercise.
He adds that these results may still help scientists discover new risk factors for certain pathologies. This could be very beneficial, especially in research against diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, the main causes of death in many countries around the world.
