An effective diabetes treatment to fight obesity

Unbelievable but true! A treatment used to treat type 2 diabetes would beeffective in treating obesity as well.

This is indeed revealed by an independent study published on July 2, 2015 in the New England Journal of Medicine(1)This study consisted in studying the effects of a drug containing liraglutide. This drug, known as SADENXA, had already been the subject of praise from the National Agency for Drug Safety (ANSM)(2)

Drug and results

This injectable medication is usually used to treat type 2 diabetes. But the researchers in this study tested the treatment on 3731 people who were obese or overweight, but did not have diabetes.

This test, carried out over 56 weeks, givesastonishing results. Indeed, liraglutide would have allowed a loss of 8.4 kg on average in obese people, while for the control group, the weight loss was only2.8 kg on average. The group of people studied, with an average age of 45 and weighing around 106 kg, came from different continents (Europe, North or South America, Australia…). Liraglutide, an incretin receptor agonist, has a hypoglycemic effect (which lowers blood sugar levels) and decreases appetite. It was injected under the skin at a rate of 3 mg per day.

More details

Specifically, 63% of patients in the treated group lost more than 5% of their initial body weight, while for the control group, treated with a placebo, they were only 27% in this case. 10% of the tested group had even lost 10% of their initial weight.

It is of course obvious that this treatment has side effects. Indeed, it appears that 40% of the people in the study treated with liraglutide would have experienced nausea, 14% in the placebo group, 20.9% vomiting. In total, 6.2% of patients who took liraglutide during the study experiencedside effects, and 5% received placebo.

It therefore appears necessary that special monitoringbe carried out when prescribing this drug. But this discovery is a big step forward in the fight against obesity. It should be remembered that weight loss with this treatment is also associated with a particular diet.
