Soybean oil: rather bad for your health

Soy is recommended in many diets. We recognize this bean belonging to the legume family, many properties. But soybean oilwould be bad for your health.

The study of the journal Plos One

In any case, this is what reveals a new study published in the journal Plos One(1).

Since obesity is a public health problem in the United States, and not only, researchers at the University of California at Riverside studied 3 specific nutrients to determine which was the most dangerous in terms of obesity and type 2 diabetes. The 3 nutrients involved are soybean oil, coconut oil and fructose.

To do this, the study was conducted on 4 groups of mice. These 4 groups received a diet containing the same number of calories, but consisting of different intakes. Indeed, one of the groups received a diet rich in coconut oil (amount equivalent to the consumption of Americans), the second group a diet consisting of half coconut oil, half soybean oil. The 3rd and 4th groups received high-fructose diets. Each proportion was equal to the consumption of Americans.

Results of the study

The results arefinal. While the group of mice given the high-fructose diets saw their weight increase by only 12% compared to the group that received the coconut oil diet, the group that received the soybean oil saw their weight explode. Indeed, it was found that the weight of mice in the “soybean oil” group had increased by 25% compared to the “coconut oil” diet and by 9% compared to the high-fiber diet. The soybean oil diet would also have led to liver side effects and a higher rate of diabetes and insulin resistance compared to other groups.

The other diets are not, of course, without side effects since problems with the kidneys were found in the group of mice on high-fructose diets. Hopefully, this study, led by Poonamjot Deol, assistant to Frances M. Sladek professor of biology and neuroscience, helps prevent obesity and diabetes not only in Americans, but alsoin the rest of the world.
