Excesses with dramatic consequences on health
In allexcess is a bad thingbut sometimes it leads to very unfortunate or even downright unexpected consequences. Do you know why specialists forbid giving sugar to animals, especially when they are old? Because it lowers their eyesight with increased risks of triggering, in old cats and dogs, blindness or even blindness.
And, what applies to our friends the beasts, is often just as valid for human beings. As proof, what happened to a young Irish woman, Lena Lupari(1).
An unusual deviance
For several years now, the 26-year-old had been drinking practically 30 cans of Red Bull® in a single day. This aberrant consumption has left him with sequelae. Indeed, drinking more than seven liters of sodadaily can only bring inconvenience and Lena almost lost her health. At the same time, when we know that this drink that appeals so much to young teenagers brings the equivalent of 5 sugar cubes per can, amazement gives way to astonishment: for the young woman, this is equivalent to 150 sugar cubes per day. How did Lena not realize that she was killing herself in silence?
Moreover, we now know that for five years terrible headaches have not ceased to plague her. Fault with taurine? Caffeine? Admittedly, these substances do not have a good press, but in this matter, it is the sugar that has damaged Lena’s vision. But in fact, nothing surprising to what happens to her because, she only “fed” Red Bull® with, as an accompaniment, some hamburgers.
Obesity is an aggravating factor
It was because of her extra pounds, due to herexcessive consumption of sodas, that Lena was the victim of idiopathic intracranial hypertension. It is the latter that is at the origin of his blindness. It should be noted that excess weight causes greater pressure in the skull and that this can compress certain blood vessels.
Regarding the young Irish, it is the retinal veins that were affected. A compressed vein leads to swelling upstream.
In this case, the taste buds at the end of the optic nerves are damaged. Her headaches, increasingly recurrent, should have pushed the young woman to consult specialized doctors who would have curbed her hypertension or would have given her advice. Is it by misinformation that Lena did not consult? Out of ignorance, or even worse by letting go?
Whose fault? To what?
In fact, intracranial hypertension causes blindness in 10% of cases. It affects 15 people out of 100,000 and mainly young women with extra pounds. Industrialized dishes, pizzas and other burgers are highly loaded with sugar and their nutritional composition is harmful to health. Energy drinks, on the other hand, promote cardiovascular events by increasing heart rate and blood pressure.
It is clear that more than 20 subjects in France have had seizures, dizziness, palpitationswhile drinking this kind of soda. The brand has suffered numerous lawsuits but it does not question itself because, in its eyes, it is not responsible for these problems of blindness.
This experience should serve as information for overweight people, but also alert fragile subjects such as pregnant women, the elderly, adolescents and children.
