Double chin: what exercises to practice to lose it?

When we ask the French what their biggest complexes are, they are few to mention the double-chin. However, this physical characteristic is far from appreciated. How to get rid of it? Are facial gym exercises effective?

First, let’s quickly go back to the principle of facial gym. It is a stimulation, by precise exercises, of the facial muscles and veno-lymphatic flow. The face has 43 muscles and the neck is also richly provided with muscles, both in its anterior and posterior part, both superficial and deep. Some are naturally stimulated by daily facial expressions, others by the natural support of the head. But facial gym aims to stimulate them differently (and more intensely) than they are their “normal” activity. In addition, the facial gym helps to revive the microcirculation, to prevent the localized accumulation of lymph – here at the level of the chin. It can therefore erase the double chin and redraw the oval of the face.

Exercise1:Sticking out your tongue

  • Sit comfortably, head straight, shoulders flexible and relaxed.
  • Stick your tongue as far ahead of you as possible, mouth wide open. Your jaw should move closer to your neck.
  • Repeat the exercise about ten times.

Exercise2:Pushing your palate

This second exercise again puts the language into action.

  • Sit comfortably, face and neck relaxed, head straight.
  • Put your tongue on your palate and push hard. To do this, do not hesitate to open your mouth ajar.
  • To feel the contraction of the neck, do not hesitate to put your hand under your chin.
  • Do 5 pushes of 5 seconds each.

Exercise3:Advance the jaw

  • Resume a relaxed posture.
  • Put your hands on your cheeks to create a slight resistance.
  • Push your lower jaw forward, chin pointing in front of you.
  • Hold the thrust for 5 seconds, then release.
  • Repeat 5-10 times.

Exercise # 4 : smile in the air

One of the best exercises to stimulate the neck muscles and gain firmness.and gain firmness.

  • Sitting, back straight, shoulders relaxed, gently tilt your head back until you are facing the ceiling.
  • Smile really hard, raising your cheekbones, for 5 seconds.
  • Release, then repeat 10 times.
  • Finally, slowly lower your head, so as not to injure your neck.

Exercise 5: say X and O

Undoubtedly one of the best known exercises, but which tones the contour of the mouth, chin and throat.

  • Again, adopt a relaxed and upright posture.
  • Pronounce the letters X exaggeratedly, then O. Your mouth opens in width, then in height.
  • Repeat 10 times, then release.

 Why do we have a double chin?

There are several causes that can explain the appearance of a double chin:

  • Overweight – the face is not devoid of adipocytes and, in case of overweight, it is quite possible to store at the level of the chin. In this case the double chin is manifested by a very palpable bulge;
  • genetics – recurrence of anatomical features is often observed within families. The double chin does not escape the rule and in this case it is due to a weak congenital projection of the chin bone;
  • posture – poor positioning of the neck, neck or shoulders (especially trapezoids) can alter the posture of the head and lymphatic circulation of the neck, and therefore cause the appearance of a double chin;
  • Venolymphatic insufficiency – this causes not only a problem of stasis (stagnant lymph) but also potentialwater retention. It should not be forgotten that the area of thefaceand neck is heavily provided with lymph nodes;
  • disease – we obviously think of thyroid disorders, such as Graves’ disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or nodules, which generate a goiter in the neck;
  • Medications– some, such as corticosteroids, antihypertensive orhormonal treatments , have repercussions on the morphology of the face and can accentuate its swelling, including in the chin;
  • age – aging effectively leads to sagging of the skin (with distension of the platysma muscle and cutaneous ptosis) and, moreover, a metabolic slowdown which itself leads to fatty accumulation in the jaw, with the appearance of a full throat .

In some cases, the medical response is the only one to remedy the double chin, whether aesthetic (for example surgery to correct a leaky chin or a facelift) or allopathic (drug treatment). But in others, hygiene-dietary measures (balanced dietphysical activity) can help. And they can be complemented by facial gym exercises and localized massages.
