Link between overweight and multiple sclerosis
A new scientific study(1) demonstratesa proven link between overweight and multiple sclerosis. This is not the first time that obesity has been associated with other pathologies, because it is the bed of many disorders, but here, it reinforces the idea that eating well on a daily basis, playing sports and adopting healthy attitudes, significantly reduces the risk of contracting multiple sclerosis.
What is multiple sclerosis?
This pathology, which affects the Central Nervous System (CNS), leads, in the short term, to forms of disabilitythat are increasingly severe. Thus, multiple sclerosis is, in the long term, disabling. It can progress until the death of the person who has it.
Medical research in this area is therefore welcome, especiallyfor preventivepurposes because, once the CNS is affected, there is unfortunately no turning back.
It is with these arguments that the authors of the study explain the need for such scientific experimentation. The latter makes it possible to realize how much taking into account the Body Mass Index (BMI, do your own test at this address:http://www.calculersonimc.fr/faites-le-test.html) is a risk factor that counts.
The study in question
The Genetic Investigation Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) is an organization that conducts genetic statistics on BMI. The International Genetics Consortium (IMSGC) manages the genetic scientific studies of multiple sclerosis.
Using data from these two organizations, the Canadian medical team conducted its research(1). The aim was to determine whether obesity could be associated with an increased risk of multiple sclerosis.
The resultsconfirmthat an increase in BMI is associated with an approximate 41% increase in the risk of contracting multiple sclerosis. For indication, going from overweight to obese status is, for an adult, to gain on average more than twenty kilos more. It is easier to understand why it is urgent to address this public health problem from an early age.
Recommendations
In order not to lead your children to obesity that is disabling in the long term for them, it is necessary, from childhood, to accustom them to take healthy habitsthat consist of hydrating properly in order to facilitate the elimination of toxins. One and a half liters of water is the daily ration necessary for the state of health.
Apart from water, preference should be given to green vegetables, fruits, proteins (eggs, fish and white meats), bread, rice or pasta with wholemeal flour, legumes (without excess) such as lentils, kidney beans, split peas, potatoes.
It is by ensuringa healthy diet, practicing moderate and well-conducted physical activity and respecting its limits that obesity will not set in adults or in the youngest. The latter, moreover, not having chosen their condition, arethe first victimsof this scourge, a reflection of our societies of overconsumption.
