EZscan : soon a diabetes screening in pharmacies?

We will not stop repeating it, the prevention of diabetes depends first and foremost on screening. You will answer me that you have to have time, make an appointment with a doctor, that it is quite tedious. Well, soon, it could be as simple as getting arounda pharmacy!

How EZscan works

TheFrench companyImpetomedical has just created a diabetes screening test available in pharmacies. The device is called EZscan. It is a non-invasive test based on the activity of the sweat glands.

The sweat or sweat glands are specialized organs that secrete sweat and, for some of them, hormones or pheromones. They are part of the exocrine glands and allow the phenomenon of perspiration.

Why study the functioning of sweat glands? Because these are innervated by small sympathetic C fibers, and sweat dysfunction is one of the first neurophysiological abnormalities identifiable in neuropathies of small nerve fibers. And then, what is it for, you will tell me. Well, diabetes has been shownto be the most common identifiable cause of small-fiber neuropathies.

That’s where the EZscan device comes in. Impetomedical explains, “EZscan is a device that enables the early detection of peripheral autonomic neuropathies with the aim of screening people with an increased risk of diabetes (including pre-diabetes). It is an alternative method of risk screening.”

How to take the test?

The test isnon-invasive and painless. 4 electrodes are applied to different parts of the body, i.e. on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, where there is a high concentration of sweat glands. A small electrical amplitude is then delivered. The test lasts only 3 minutes. The device then displays probability results. These are represented as a diagram on a touch screen. It is anelectrical conductivity scorethat is calculated, and it is represented in the form of 3 colors: Green: no risk, Yellow: moderate risk, Red-orange: high risk.

This device therefore makes diabetes screening a little more attractive, which is a good thing because prevention is very important in diabetes. EZscan is already used in many countries, such as the Netherlands where more than 10,000 people have already been tested.
