Men more vulnerable to fatty acids

A diet high in fat facilitates the onset of obesity, which causes inflammation of the central nervous system or CNS. An American study shows that men and women react differently to fatty acids, explaining that the male sex would have greater cerebral and cardiac vulnerability.

An effect on the central nervous system

A diet rich in fats and sugars promotes the appearance of adipose tissue on the one hand, but would have an action on the central nervous system. Some studies identify overweight and obesity as a factor favoring the development of inflammation responsible for diseases linked to the central nervous system, such as neurodegenerative diseases.

A study conducted by researchers at the Cedar-Sinai Medial Center based in Los Angeles, showed on mice that males develop more easily, with a diet enriched in fats and sugars, cardiac and nervous disorders. Females show better resistance to this diet and seem to tolerate it more easily.

A mechanism related to estrogen

In male mice, it is a reduction of a specific protein of the metabolism having an action in particular on the receptors of estrogens in the neurons, as well as in the hypothalamus. This decrease leads to inflammation and is associated with a decrease in the function of the myocardium, which is the muscle of the heart.

American researchers have also demonstrated the rapidity of this mechanism in male subjects subjected to a diet high in fat.

However, females find themselves protected by estrogen and therefore develop a better resistance to these metabolic disorders caused by obesity.

These conclusions prove the impact that fatty acids have on the central nervous system, as well as the action it has on the complications linked to obesity. However, this work needs to be confirmed in humans, but would lead to a review of the different treatments for obesity, in particular according to gender.
