What to do against falling breasts?
Emblematic attributes of femininity, breasts are sometimes objects of complex: shape, curve, volume … and firmness. Falling breasts are a relatively natural phenomenon. Yet women fear seeing their breasts sag as they age. To learn more about sagging breasts and solutions to avoid falling breasts, read on.

ToggleWhat is breast ptosis and how does it manifest itself?
The sagging of the breasts has a name: breast ptosis. This phenomenon is due to a sagging of the mammary gland, associated with distension of the skin. Breast ptosis is characterized by:
- A drooping aspect of the breast
- A nipple that tends to point downwards and/or gradually distends
- An enlarged breast or, on the contrary, a loss of volume (breast hypoplasia)
To diagnose it, women are often advised to do the “pencil test”. It consists of placing a pencil in the fold of the submammary fold. If the pencil falls off, the breasts are toned and have a good hold. If the pencil holds, we have confirmation of a ptosis.
Finally, it should be noted thatbreast ptosis is not painful and is perfectly benign. The affected woman obviously feels the sensations of a droopingchest. She can sometimes suffer from back pain, if the sagging of the breasts is accompanied by breast hypertrophy. Indeed the weight of the chest can cause back tension. But the major inconvenience of breast ptosis is especiallyaesthetic. Many women have a hard time having “falling breasts”. They see it as a visible mark of age, or even as a loss of femininity.
What causes breast ptosis?
They are varied and can affect all women, regardless of their age.
1- The case of congenital ptosis
A very particular case, where the sagging appears in the girl. This type of ptosis can sometimes be accompanied by another malformation:
- Asymmetrical breasts: we are not talking about slight asymmetry (quite common in women), but marked differences between the two breasts. Significant difference in size, shape or “level”.
- Tuberous breasts: they are characterized by a cylindrical shape (called tubular), a very wide areola and a submammary fold placed too high (hence the appearance of falling breasts). This malformation is visible from the formation of the girl’s chest.
2- Breast hypertrophy
It is due to excessive development of the mammary glands, with or without excess fat. Breast hypertrophy is therefore characterized by a volume of breasts too large compared to the morphology of the woman. Under the effect of gravity, thechest, heavy, falls. Breast hypertrophy is of congenital or hormonal origin and it can appear in many contexts: puberty, pregnancy, weight gain, menopause. Note that when it becomes problematic in everyday life (pain, complex, disability during sports, difficulties in dressing), it may be subject to surgery (breast reduction).
3- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
During pregnancy, a woman’s breast changes and takes on volume. In question, the lactation process, since lactogenesis starts in the middle of pregnancy. Also:
- Milk acorns grow
- Milk ducts multiply
- Blood circulation is intensified, to ensure the optimal functioning of the mammary glands
Pregnancy-related breast hypertrophy continues during the breastfeeding period. Then the chest gradually returns to its “normal” size, once the breastfeeding phase is over. However, the skin of the breasts, subjected to significant distension, can lose elasticity and relax. Breast ptosis is a common result of pregnancy, whether or not followed by breastfeeding.
4- Significant weight loss
Weight losscan lead to the phenomenon of “breast melting”: loss of volume and skin elasticity (because the skin of the breast has not been able to retract correctly). The breasts are smaller but loose and tend to droop – colloquially known as “washcloth” breasts.
5- Age
Two parameters explain age-related breast ptosis:
- Menopause often leads to fat gain in the bust and abdomen, linked to the collapse of sex hormones.
- Aging causes thinning of the dermis and epidermis and degradation of the hydrolipidic film of the skin.
Thus, breast enlargement, associated with skin breakdown, often leads to breast ptosis in postmenopausal women.
What are the solutions for sagging breasts?
1- Strengthen your pecs
The breasts are certainly devoid of muscles, but women are still equipped with Pecstag. Strengthening them reduces the phenomenon of breast ptosis. Simple exercises can help strengthen the pectorals: push-ups, chest opening with a fitness elastic, pressure on a ball with the palms of the hands or even bench press. Certain sports are also excellent for toning the bust, such as backstroke, rowing, ballet or floor bar.
2- Adopt a cosmetic routine
Cosmetics focused on “special bust and décolleté” formulations. These creams generally offer atriple moisturizing, firming and protective actiontag. The skin of the breasts is very fragile, because it has the particularity of containing only a few sebaceous glands. The hydrolipidic film is therefore almost non-existent at the neckline. The daily application of a cream therefore protects the breasts and maintains a certain firmness.
The application of the care must be done by a delicate and prolonged massage, for a maximum of effectiveness. Be sure not to forget the sides and underside of the chest. The ideal is to apply your care after the shower. If the latter ends with aJet of Cool Wateron the chest, it’s even better. The application of cold will indeed tone the skin and stimulate blood circulation.
3- Choose suitable lingerie
Many women still choose their lingerie poorly. It even seems that 80% of women do not know their exact bra size, nor the shape that suits them best. However, the daily wearing of well-adjusted lingerie is a prevention against sagging breasts. To choose the best bra, it is a question of:
- Take your Measurements correctlycorrectly . The Internet is full of good guides to learn how to measure your chest circumference.
- Try on your bra before you buy ittag. Three control points must be taken into account: the back circumference, which must be neither too tight nor too loose, the coverage of the cup (the breast must be well wrapped, without overflowing or floating), and the straps, which must to be able to adjust properly.
It should also be specified that sports practice requires the wearing of a sports bra. To avoid any risk of breast ptosis, it is important to choose a model that presses the breasts well against the bust, to avoid the bust as much as possible. The jolts weaken the elasticity of the naturally delicate breast skin.
4- Watch your weight and posture
To avoid having a sagging chest, it is important to maintain a healthy weighttag. As seen above, weight gain and loss have repercussions on breast volume and skin elasticity. By avoiding excessive weight fluctuations, the phenomenon of breast ptosis is prevented.
Daily posturealso has an influence on the breasts. Slouched postures, shoulders held “inside” and nights sleeping on your stomach should be avoided if you want to keep your chest firm.
5- The surgery box
If the solutions mentioned above are insufficient – they are rather preventive measures for breast ptosis, cosmetic surgery can be a solution to sagging breasts.
There are three types of breast surgery, depending on the nature of the ptosis:
- In case of hypoplastic ptosis: the breasts are small and droopy. The surgery will therefore consist of a mammaplasty to enhance the chest and the placement of prostheses, to recover a correct volume.
- In case of ptosis with hypertrophy: the sagging is due to too large a volume of the breasts. The surgery will consist of a breast reduction.
- In case of ptosis with breast asymmetry: a breast plasty will be considered, in order to symmetrize the breasts. It can be accompanied by an increase (by breaking a prosthesis or fat injection) or a breast reduction (decrease in volume and removal of excess skin)
Cosmetic breast surgery is, moreover, not a trivial act. It involves hospitalization and general anesthesia. It also requires careful consideration and an informed choice of the surgeon.
