A simple apple to limit obesity
A study by researchers at the University of Washington shows thateating an apple a day would promote the fight against obesity. One strain in particular, Granny Smith, would be of greater interest, with certain compounds capable of reducing the risks associated with obesity.
This study revealed in the journal Food Chemistry(1) specifies the importance of the role of microbiotics in the balance of body mass.
Granny Smith properties
The conclusions of this research carried out by researcher Giuliana Noratto, refer to compounds in apples, more particularly Granny Smith, which would be beneficial and provide a solution to obesity. These compounds would have the ability to increase the development of “good bacteria” in the intestines, especially in the colon. Their main property lies in their ability tosurvive chewing, then gastric juices, to finally be fermented in the colon, thus participating in the multiplication of favorable bacteria.
« The feces of obese mice fed Granny Smith apples end up containing proportions of fecal bacteria comparable to those of normal-weight mouse feces,” says Noratto.
This study also includes a comparison of different varieties of apples, claiming that the green apple, Granny Smith, would have dietary fiber and polyphenols in greater quantities. This variety would also show a lower glycemic index, thus promoting the maintenance and balance of weight.
A discovery to treat obesity-related problems
The conclusions of this research would contribute to the treatment of certain consequences related to obesity, including the occurrence of diabetes.
The action of the indigestible compounds of Granny Smith apples would reduce chronic inflammation. Causing a metabolic imbalance, this inflammation is known to be responsible for obesity. The restoration of theintestinal florastabilizes the various metabolic processes, thus promoting a decrease in inflammation and the feeling of satiety. “The balance of the intestinal flora depends on the food consumed,” explains the researcher.
This research is in addition to a 2012 study published in the journal PLoS ONE, demonstrating the capabilities of ursolic acid, present in the skin of apples. This would contribute to the elimination of calories by accelerating their burning and would therefore promote the reduction of obesity.
This study shows the place ofmicrobioticsin the maintenance and balance of weight and proves that the consumption of an apple a day can effectively fight against obesity. Conclusions with good prospects in the field of nutrition.
