All diets have one thing in common: their ineffectiveness.
Summer is almost here and with it, its anthology of slimming diets of all kinds: Dukan, high-protein, detox, low-calorie, etc. However, doctors and patients want to educate the population against certain dangers of these private diets, ie which prohibit certain categories of food.
Diets not recommended even for the loss of a few pounds
Our body is a complex organism, composed of regulators programmed to resist, in the long term, food and water shortages. We are not designed for repeated dieting.
Any deprivation generates various phenomena. We know that :
- The diet melts the muscles in priority, while it is the latter that consume the most energy. Thus, when the diet is stopped, the body, in loss of muscle mass, will consume fewer kilocalories for a greater intake of absorbed energy. The body will grow.
- The diet causes a ” rebound effect ” because fat cells do not really disappear and resume their vigor as soon as food intake returns to normal.
- Diets lead to psychological disturbances due to deprivation and repetitive failures. This leads to behavioral problems, loss of confidence and self-esteem.
In fact, if diets don’t work, it’s because they force the body to adapt quickly by causing harmful hormonal and brain changes.
The diet is not the only behavior to discriminate
Dieting is not good for mental and bodily balance. However, all the societal changes that have taken place in recent decades are also in question. Food is too abundant, too industrialized, too sweet and too salty… In fact, we eat much more and less well than our ancestors who were absolutely not sedentary.
The evil comes from our current mode of consumption and industrial lobbies who are ready to sell anything, on any condition from the moment it is “trade”.
It is the whole functioning of our Western society that is discriminated against and that pulls “down” a population that no longer makes allowance for things. This is why the education system must get back on track as soon as possible (1) .
So how do you prevent overweight?
We know, since nutrition specialists are mobilizing to denounce the devastating effects of obesity, that this must go through an educational approach that makes the population aware of the dual combination of balanced diet and regular physical activity. It is she who will be the keystone to prevent obesity.
It is urgent :
- To treat the cause of weight gain rather than wanting to lose pounds without understanding the mechanisms. During a particular stress, especially if it lasts for months or even years, the body undergoes chemical, hormonal, cerebral, physiological upheavals. The same is true in the event of lack of sleep, overactivity, taking alcohol or psychoactive substances, addictive behavior, etc.
- To train doctors in food sensations (2) so that they work out, with their patients, a work based on a natural approach which consists of eating while rediscovering the sensations of hunger and satiety. This work is accompanied by an analysis of the factors that hinder this approach.
- To intervene as soon as possible , from early childhood by diversifying the meals. Limit or even eliminate what manufacturers want us to buy, make children aware of good behavior to integrate into everyday life and also remain lucid in the face of advertising messages that are not always benevolent (3) .
