Are ADHD and obesity linked?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) manifests itself in three variabes which are: characterized inattention, impulsivity of every moment andhyperactivitypreventing the child from concentrating on ordinary tasks that require, after all, concentration. ADHD can be more or less marked depending on the subject.

In any case, hyperactivity, impulse and inattention are the three factors necessary to diagnose Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder but these three behaviors may not be combined. Indeed, to sign the “ADHD diagnosis” a child can be in a state of hyperactivity and impulsivity without, however, being in inattention. Moreover, it is scientifically proven that, in boys, it is often this case that tends to manifest itself.

What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

Concretely, people with ADHD have difficulty keeping their attention constant, concentrating sustainably and completing simple tasks. They can’t stay put, behave instinctively, uncontrolled, and sometimes don’t even manage queuing at store checkouts. It is necessary to know how to differentiate between normal and pathological behavior in children with these disorders. In the last case, the dysfunctions are abnormally significant and prolonged while having a certain constancy and this in every moment of daily life.

It should also be noted that in ADHD, hyperactivity is an accessory component and that hyperactivity or not, this pathology concerns 3.5 to 5.6% of schoolchildren. Those with attention disorders account for about 50% of children diagnosed. Those who are victims of hyperactivity and impulsivity are less affected, in the order of 38%. Children who combine all three symptoms at the same time are 17%. This pathology is usually diagnosed around the age of seven. But children who suffer from it have delicate behaviors from the age of two.

ADHD and obesity

Since a recent study(1), it has been scientifically proven that a link between obesity and ADHD is linked. However, past randomizations have not updated this link. Indeed, they did not have the same subjects of comparison.

The latest study takes into account children from the same generation while being in the same age group.

In 2015, the High Authority for Health targeted more appropriate and targeted care recommendations. Thus, 336 children born between 1976 and 1982 with ADHD and 665 others of different ages, of the same sex and without ADHD will be compared. Through these studies, it is already revealed that there is a statistical link between obesity and ADHDand not a causal link. However, young girls with ADHD are twice as likely to suffer from obesity as others. These explanations, given by Dr. Kumar, should encourage health specialists to give their patients advice and preventive measures such as, for example, physical activity, regular drinking and eating a balanced diet.

Thus, ADHD is not inevitable. Indeed, it is often neurological and therefore dependent on genetic heredity and environmental factors. Scientists are clear: ADHD does not originate from a disruption of unresolved emotional needs or any psychosocial problems, although it remains true that these exacerbate the disorder.
