Diabetes, a growing epidemic…
Diabetes, in its various aspects, affects an average of 356 million people worldwide. The number of people affected by this disease continues to grow. It is estimated that 552 million people could suffer from this disease within 15 years .
What type of diabetes can you suffer from?
There are several forms of diabetes: that which occurs at birth, that which may develop for people suffering from overweight or obesity, or even gestational diabetes dedicated to certain pregnant women.
Two kinds ( types ) of this disease are distinguished. First of all, so-called type 1 diabetes, the rarest, appears when the immune system destroys the beta cells of the pancreas in charge of insulin production. The body, lacking the latter, patients will be treated with insulin daily. This type of diabetes called juvenile or insulin-dependent appears from the first years of the individual.
Then, type 2 diabetes (better known), affecting 90% of people suffering from this disease. The pancreas not supplying enough insulin or the latter produced in the patient not acting correctly causes this diabetes.
The people affected by this disease are mainly people over the age of 40, but diabetes can also affect young adults (as well as, sometimes, children). The individuals who will be most affected by this disease remain people over the age of 60. If they are overweight or obese, diabetes may develop more easily .
Which populations are affected by this disease?
In terms of populations and origins, no state would be immune to diabetes. France, United States, African States, this disease affects all countries whether developed or developing countries.
In France, the INVS noted a rate of 4.7% of individuals suffering from diabetes corresponding to 3 million people.
According to statistics, certain regions are more affected by this disease: Nord Pas de Calais, Picardy, Seine Saint Denis and Overseas Departments. This difference would be due to the lower standard of living but also to the presence of greater precariousness in these regions.
Beyond France, North America, certain countries in the Middle East, the Caribbean, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar are also areas very affected by diabetes, in fact present in developed countries but also developing regions.
Drug treatment or lifestyle change
The alarming figures of the growth of this disease are constantly increasing. As previously announced, by 2030 diabetes could affect 552 million people worldwide.
This growth, studied during the French Day of Diabetics (FFD) which took place on November 14, highlighted a main cause of the evolution of this disease: overweight, obesity and lack of physical activity would be an obvious link of the increase in this disease.
However, the committee of the FFD (French Federation of Diabetics) has also shown that the parallel causes of this disease remain genetics, lifestyle (diet, sedentary lifestyle, physical or sports activity) and the aging of the population.
Despite the treatment offered to patients suffering from diabetes in France, it seems that it is not enough. A campaign for the prevention of diabetes and associated complications aimed at educating and supporting patients could provide answers for them, their parents and those close to them.
The FFD, very concerned about the significant evolution of this disease, would opt more for raising awareness among the population in order to demonstrate that the diet and lifestyle that can be modified by each individual would allow a regression in the evolution of this disease. sickness.
