“Junk Food” would promote the risk of non-alcoholic cirrhosis

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Hepathology(1), overconsumption of fatty and sugary foods would increase the risk of NAFLD :SteatosisHepaticNonAlcoolic (i.e. cirrhosis). Sugary drinks such as sodas are the first concerned, and are designated, according to the results of this new American study, as a factor promoting the risk of NAFLD, in the presence of regular consumption.

Overconsumption of sugary drinks would create a major health risk

Many studies have already revealed before, thatsugary drinks represent a health risk. In this new study, researchers from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at the University of Massachusetts in the USA, correlated the consumption of bubble-sweetened beverages and cola of about 2634 men and women with their fat concentration in the liver, including using CT scans.

The results reveal that individuals who drinkmore than one sugary drink each day are at greater risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD, than people who consume water instead.

Be aware that the results were taken into account after highlighting different risk factors such as gender, age, lifestyle and BMI (Body Mass Index).

« We observed that regular consumption of sugary drinks was associated with an increased risk of fatty liver disease, especially in overweight and obese people,” says Jiantao Ma, lead author of the study, a nutrition and dietetics researcher who graduated from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.

Sugary drink and NAFLD, a relationship still to be proven

However, this study does not yet establish a direct link between the consumption of bubble-sweetened beverages and the risk of developing this disease, NAFLD. The researchers have therefore explained that they want todeepen the question, in particular, by carrying out new studies, in order to understand the different causes.

« If the obesity epidemic is an indicator, the NAFL effect observed in the United States could resonate around the world,” says Mark Thursz, of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, who also conducted and led the research. The researchers point out that nearly 30% of adults in the United States are affected by non-alcoholic cirrhosis. The best way to avoid itis to adopt healthy eating habits.
