Lemon and orange against diabetes
A glass of orange juice or lemon juice every morning at breakfast isa great habitto fill up on vitamin C first thing in the morning. But citrus fruits still have many other tricks up their sleeve.
Indeed, the latter are rich in flavonoids, very powerful antioxidants, capable, apparently, of reversing several chronic diseases.
This was revealed at the Annual Meeting of the American Chemical Society. A team of researchers from the Estudial Paulista University in Brazil came to present the conclusions of a study they had conducted on the subject.
The study
The researchers looked at the effects of flavonoids on oxidative stress, responsible for the onset of chronic diseasessuch as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Oxidative (or oxidizing) stress is caused by the accumulation of fat in the body, causing an imbalance through the production of toxic substances.
To study the effects of flavonoids on the body, the team took more than fifty mice (not genetically modified) and divided them into 3 distinct groups. The 1st group was fed “normally” (standard diet), the second received a high-fat diet of the Western type, and the last group received a diet high in fat but with the addition of flavonoids contained in lemon and orange.
The results
It was then noticed that the flavonoids helped inthe decrease of oxidative stressin mice, a decrease in lipid and blood sugar levels, as well as a decrease in liver damage. It was not noticed, however, weight loss. These observations were not detected in the first 2 groups of mice.
Drink lemon juice, and orange juice!
These results demonstrate that the flavonoids present in citrus fruitshelp prevent, or delay, the onset of chronic diseasesrelated to obesity. People who are not obese can of course also consume citrus fruits (preferably nature, “homemade” juices, commercial juices most often containing too much added sugar). These will be just as beneficial to them.
Studies are currently underway to determine the most effective administration: consume fried food directly or through dietary supplements.
