Physical activity mapped in France
Physical activity is essential for good health. In this area, there are great disparities. But we don’t know exactly which ones until today. In which region do we do the most sport? Which age group is the most affected by a sedentary lifestyle? Answers are finally given to all these questions, simply thanks to a connected health application.
Indeed, the French company Whitings, creator of many connected objects such as a bathroom scale or a connected bracelet counting the number of steps during the day and measuring blood pressure, has decided to use all the data collected thanks to these objects. (1) .
Many data have been collected through these applications, data concerning the health status of users. Whitings therefore decided not to let this data sleep and analyzed it, while of course respecting the confidentiality of users. The company is therefore launching a physical activity observatory in France on Monday, February 9, 2015, based on data from 100,000 users of these connected objects.
A map of France is available on this site http://obs.withings.com (see source and references of this article for the clickable link) and tells us a lot about sports behavior and the health of French people. We learn there, for example, that the sedentary lifestyle is very strong in Corsica and Brittany , with, respectively, 40.8% and 34% of users. A person who walks fewer than 4,000 steps per day is considered sedentary, according to the Whitings Society. (Remember that the World Health Organization recommends 10,000 steps daily).
This is a world first. The authors of the study of course hope that this will be able to help in terms of prevention and follow-up. Whitings works in close collaboration with doctors and research institutes , and the data is very regularly updated, allowing us to follow the evolution of the French in terms of good or bad sporting behavior, and their state of health.
It should be remembered all the same that the role of the patient (user) himself is very important. Doctor BOBRIE Guillaume, of the European Georges Pompidou Hospital, specifies on this subject that nothing would be done without the patient and that ” Connected health, by putting new objects and new information in their hands, renews the relationship between consumers care and health professionals. This is particularly true in terms of compliance and therapeutic inertia. »
