Put an end to junk food, under what conditions?

Fast food, meals on the go, fat, sugar, junk food is now part of our daily lives and now seems well anchored to us to be eradicated.

However, there are still optimists. Pierre WEILL, agricultural engineer, scientist and entrepreneur, thinks it is possible to get rid of junk food.

This is what he explains in the program “Le Magazine de la Santé” on France 5, on May 6 (1) , when he presents his new book “Mangez, on s’occupation de tout”. (2)

Who exactly is Pierre WEILL?

He is a scientist who has co-authored many articles in important journals with researchers from INRA, CNRS and CERN. Agronomist and researcher, he founded the “Bleu, Blanc, Cœur” association (a health-oriented agricultural approach).

He is therefore a committed person, and who has already written several books on junk food and obesity since 2007.

Why do we eat badly?

The economic crisis, according to Mr. WEILL, is largely responsible for junk food. The consumer is ready to reduce his food budget, even if it means sacrificing quality, to attribute it more to treatments, for example.

” It’s a vicious circle, ” he thinks, while, he recalls, good health goes with good nutrition.

The food industry is also responsible for junk food, thinks Mr. WEILL, lowering their prices more and more, to the detriment of the quality of the products used. He also explains in the interview that it was following the horse meat scandal in France that he had the idea of writing his book.

How to avoid junk food?

Mr. Pierre WEILL thinks that the solutions are long-term . “We need to raise awareness among the population,” he said. Indeed, for him, the consumer must realize that he must “eat better to be in good health, to save the purchase of treatments, and therefore, in the end, to save money on all fronts”. It is therefore necessary, during your shopping, to take the time to choose your products, even if it means paying a little more for them.

But in our current society, how can we manage to take this precious time, when our days are all speed and haste?

Mr. WEILL, on this subject, replies that there are efforts to be made coming from what he calls “corporate social responsibility, those responsible for sustainable development” and recalls that the food industry is often associated with the junk food. “Food distributors must therefore make the right products available to help consumers in their quest for quality”.

Mr. WEILL adds that a change in behavior in agriculture (stopping GMOs, stopping pesticides, alternating crops, better animal feed, etc.) would certainly be expensive in the short term, but would be more than beneficial in of the long term. He gives as examples a better yield of crops, or even more births of calves.

The solution, to conclude, would therefore come from a collective awareness at all levels , thus allowing the disappearance of junk food and the many problems (health and economic) arising from it.
