Rome: 2nd International Conference on Nutrition
It is at the 2nd International Conference on Nutritionscheduled for this month in Romethat strategies to reduce malnutrition will be used to lead a more balanced life in terms of nutrition.
Hunger and undernourishment are detrimental to overall health. And, while children experience disruptions in their cognitive and physical development, adults become less productive in their work.
The observation
Since the end of the Second World War, food production has tripled. In the last ten years, in the Asia-Pacific region alone (where almost all vegetables are grown in the world), vegetable production has evolved and more than 800 million people suffer from undernourishment despite a food supply. More than 2 billion of usare in deficit of several trace elements.
It is through a more appropriate policy, international solidarity, investment in access to food, that we should break the deadlock. These are all subjects that must be discussed in Rome this November.
It’s time to transform what already exists
Transforming existing systems by conducting campaigns for education and public health to ensure the guarantee of social protection has been in place for many years, but it is not enough. Jobs and incomes must be generated from such a system. It is up to distributors and, at the base, producersto move up a gear in terms of sustainability. Recently, farmers launched Operation “Let Go of the Cluster”(1). They saturate before the enormity of the constraints and standards to be respected.
Evolution cannot therefore be established at the expense of the subsistence of this trade.
The flagship measure is to ensure that food policy interventions are primarily focused on diversifying agricultural systems. Relearn how to use water without wasting it, use the land without bombarding it with pesticides and, for this, use natural fertilizers. Finally, to allow access to efficient work in terms of economic sustainability… All this will serve to refocus on the essential.
Finding a balance seems essential
Between the production of foods rich in trace nutrients and the preservation of our environment, a happy medium must be put in place. The animal is no longer considered as a piece of furniture or an object. It’s about time! We must realize that milk, eggs, meat have greatly enriched our daily diet. However, can this be done smoothly and with respect for the living?
In addition, excessive food consumption, waste and an unsustainable production systemhave resulted in an increase in obesityin all countries of the world, a development of diseases and a radical change in terms of climate. 2050 is our next line of sight and, on this date, everything must be modified, transformed, appeased… A real challenge, it goes without saying!
For in various parts of this planet endemic hunger exists even as the world’s population becomes obese. A real paradox!
Because drinking water supplies are dwindling, as are hectares of forests. Because soils are being degraded and biodiversity is decreasing. Finally, because over-consumption generates enormous waste… It’s time to take the bull by the horns. Because it is a little bit of all this that contributes to the decline of animal species and, in the longer term, of humanity as a whole.
