The documentary that the food industries denounce

We must no longer ignore that the food industry maintains a consumer addiction to sugar. For almost 30 years, it has been the major cause of the obesity epidemic which is spreading across the Atlantic and is arriving in force in Europe.

Le film « Fed Up »

In some countries, as many as 30% of people end up obese or overweight. This weekend, the documentary “Fed Up” was released in North American theaters but the food industry received it with a loss and a crash. Conceived at the beginning of the year in Utah by Stéphanie Soechtig, this one and a half hour documentary denounces the food industry. For the director, these cultivate, among the American population, the addiction to sweet foods. However, and this is the very cause of the global scourge, obesity continues to increase year after year. This film, presented at the Sundance festival, highlights the chemical action of processed foods which act on consumers like an addictive substance by transforming them into drug addicts.

A paradoxical reality at the source of the controversy

The paradox lies in the fact that Americans have begun to do more sport than before. Despite this increase in physical activity, obesity in the United States continues to be a concern. In addition, they consume lighter food but in fact, few of them feel better. These 90 minutes of film, where the director denounces these facts, wage war on sugar . The food industries do not hear it that way.

In the film, we visualize children who fail to lose weight despite a healthy diet and regular physical activity. They are found to live surrounded by food rich in added sugar . At school pizza and hot dogs are served for lunch. This documentary denounces what existed in 2006 but not in 2012: schools offered fresh products, whereas 6 years later, it was fast food.

What the industrialists refute

In the United States, even more than in France, the public health policies carried out to fight against obesity are proving to be a failure. In fact, the film demonstrates that the authorities were the wrong target. And that it is not the lack of exercise which is to be discriminated against but the sugar. This phenomenon is so important that the fracture line is reached. However, money is the problem. And the food industry knows it well! Under this influence are the politicians directly. This is why the director is counting on the impact of this documentary. She hopes that the message will get through and be heard so that people get involved, change some of their behaviors and that parents, who have an educational role in the matter, fulfill their role.

Michelle Obama’s “Let’s move” campaign

Thanks to Mrs. Obama, some politicians are pushing industrialists to the wall by asking them to reduce sugar levels in culinary preparations. However, brands such as Pepsi, Coca Cola or Pizza Hut are still present in schools. And even if multiple politicians monopolize in order to make things happen, the financial interests are such that the power of money remains the strongest.

Stéphanie Soechtig assumes that things can change. For her, if the food industry does not change anything in the commercial mindset, it will be essential to no longer buy their products. As for politicians, the best thing is to vote for those who wish to improve life. But are there any in the United States?
