The equation that calculates the risk of obesity at birth

There are children who, when it comes to obesity, are, unfortunately, more prone to gaining weight than others. This predisposition, according to a recent study, could be detected from an early age depending on different environmental factors. We explain more in this article…

Every metabolism is different, including those of our infants. The study by Professor Philippe FROGUEL, with the international “genomics and metabolic diseases” team, highlights the development of a calculator that will collect data from the birth of children in order to determine a risk for the child will become obese in the years to follow (risk expressed as a percentage). The professor thus wishes to show that without recourse to restrictive examinations, it would be possible to carry out this calculation in order to know the risks of obesity of his child: all in a “simple” equation.

Certain criteria such as the socio-cultural characteristics of the different countries are taken into account in the equation. The examination thus emphasizes the early detection of obesity, or its risks, in order to put all the chances on its side to preserve the child concerned, from weight problems that may arise in the near future if the The result of the calculation turns out to be unsatisfactory.

This work is published in the journal PLoS One on November 28, 2012

This research was carried out on a panel of 4000 children, who were followed up to the age of 16.

The results are easy to obtain, as follows: We record the body mass index of the parents (before pregnancy), we record the weight of the mother (during her pregnancy), that of the baby (from birth), the mother’s job, if cigarettes are smoked during pregnancy, as well as the different children in the family.

The resulting equation, converted into a calculator, provides a value for the subject’s future risk of obesity.

The percentage of children at risk of gaining weight is 25%, which determines that 80% of families are concerned. This equation will therefore be used to identify people at risk, from birth. Remember that the data in the equation are not identical from one country to another. Many differences exist and must be taken into account in the calculations.

The statistics in Europe regarding childhood obesity vary between 10 and 25%.
Obesity being triggered, it is not easy to restrict it, because it is early and for that we will use this equation preventively.

Already, doctors and dietitians, like all health professionals, will be able to use the data provided by this equation to determine very early on the risk of obesity in children and to develop the tools necessary for its prevention. .

As a reminder: 5% of significant weight gain results from chromosomal abnormalities and genetic mutations.
