The Montignac diet

The  Montignac diet (1)  is a popular diet. If it interests and attracts many people seeking to lose weight, it is because it promises them weight loss by  avoiding frustration and cravings, two rather unpleasant states which are at the origin of many diets.

Generally speaking, the Montignac method can be considered a variant of the dissociated diet . To undertake it and follow it to the letter, you will therefore have to exercise some control over your diet.

THE PRINCIPLES OF THE DIET

The principle of the Montignac method may seem complex but it is based on a relatively simple principle. The Montignac diet differentiates between good and bad carbohydrates . These are the ones that would be the cause of weight gain. We are not talking about calories here, but about the glycemic index . Indeed, carbohydrates represent in a pictorial way fuel that the body can use as soon as it needs it, but these carbohydrates have the particularity of causing insulin peaks when they are consumed. If these insulin spikes are too many and too large, weight gain is a direct consequence.

» Principle: to differentiate the good carbohydrates from the bad ones for this we look at the GI (Glycemic Index) of each of the foods that we wish to consume, and we mainly orient ourselves towards low GIs . Thus, certain foods are authorized and others much less recommended.

According to this principle, it is all his diet that must be reviewed in depth to allow a rapid loss. Sugar, pasta, white bread (all refined flours), potatoes, white rice are among the foods that provide bad carbohydrates and must therefore be eliminated. All foods such as wholemeal bread, brown rice will act as substitutes. Another important precept of the diet: never mix carbohydrates and fats .

ADVANTAGES

It is a relatively balanced diet , it is a question of consuming carbohydrates as well as fats, but in normal quantities and in a separate way . For carbohydrates, we simply rule out foods that are not recommended according to their GI (Glycemic Index).

It’s a relatively balanced diet with few adverse health effects.

DISADVANTAGES

Of course, like all weight loss diets, the Montignac method is not the miracle solution to weight problems and also has some disadvantages. It can be said that this diet remains complex , especially in the early stages. Indeed, to do it correctly it is important to know which food is a source of carbohydrates, which food is a source of lipids which is not always obvious and favors errors .

This method can sometimes comfort people in their bad eating habits

The  yo-yo effect  is relatively present, but the method is generally effective.

In addition, the Montignac diet has the reputation of being quite fatty. It leads to a high consumption of fats but also of proteins which can, in the long term, be harmful to the body . From a psychological point of view, it is not certain that this method helps to feel on a diet. On the contrary, it only reinforces people in their bad eating habits. Once the pounds have been lost, returning to a normal diet is difficult and above all, synonymous with regaining weight .

ORIGINS OF THE REGIME

The Montignac diet was developed by businessman and nutritionist Michel Montignac in the 1980s. He was the first to use the glycemic index table of foods as part of a slimming diet. The Montignac method consists in distinguishing the good from the bad carbohydrates thanks to their high or low glycemic index.
