What is the Slow Food movement?
Today, “eating well” has become a major social and societal concern around the world. Thus, in our supermarkets there are shelves that offer products from organic farming. There are products called “Vegan”, these do not come from animal exploitation. There are alsolocally produced commodities.
The “Slow Food” food movement advocates a diet oriented towards “the good, the clean and the just”. Born in 1986, it is now an increasingly influential international association. It proposes a new, at least alternative, way of eating. But what is behind this movement whose logo is a snail (symbolizing the difficulty and slowness of their actions)?
The development of a global food movement
The movement appeared in the 1980s, in the midst of the globalization of eating habits and practices. Thisglobalizationis causing the standardization of tastes on a global scale, with everyone eating the same thing in every corner of the globe. In addition to destroying local culinary cultures, this globalization leads toproblems related to weight and obesityin many countries.
It was in reaction to the installation of a McDonald’s in the eternal city of Rome, that Carlo Petrini and other Italians founded the association. Federating many Italians, the association took on an international dimension in 1989 during the development of its manifesto in Paris.
Today, the movement has several thousand members. They are spread over nearly a hundred countries around the world: the movement has itself become globalized. Their main means of action is the holding of international trade fairs. For example, the “Aux origines du goût” fair (Montpellier), the “Savoirs et saveurs de montagne” fair (Gap), the “Goût” fair (Turin), “Slow Fish” (Genoa)… etc. Many events are organized in all major cities of the world. They aim to spread ecogastronomyand altergastronomy.
The ideals defended by Slow Food
, and not by adding sugar or other synthetic products, which are found in many foods on the market.
